Every year, we plan a small local expedition to discover some of the small tucked away niche adventure spots located in the top of the South. The idea is to be able to write up trip reports like this to give locals ideas to recreate locally and to give people coming to the Nelson region […]
Hiking
Toe Rag Trapline
In December last year we hiked one of our favourite day hikes in the Nelson Area, the Kaituna track( you can see our blogpost for that trip here). While we were hiking through the Kaituna track we stumbled on a sign for the Kaituna Toe Rag trapline, and it sparked some curiosity to what lay […]
Rainbow skifield to Saint Arnaud via Parachute rocks Day Hike
We’re just getting round to writing the trip report for the transport we ran back in November 2023 for a great Alpine hike in the Nelson area We’re always looking for new places to adventure, and especially those places slightly off the beaten track. After scouring the topo maps for some awesome alpine environments to […]
Mole Tops, Tutaki Conservation area, 3 day Winter Trip
We’re always looking for an opportunity around this time of the year to head up into the Alpine and into the white powder. For this trip the Mole tops weren’t on our radar to start with, we were planning to head further up the Matakitaki valley and to try to get to the Summit of […]
A different approach….Mount Owen via the lookout Range
Nelson, New Zealand is locationally blessed with three National parks and one forest Park on our doorstep as well as a raft of smaller reserves. Some destinations are easy to find such as the Abel Tasman Coastal track and the Heaphy track…. but there’s some equally good if not better adventure destinations when you scratch […]
The Kaituna Track, Northwest Nelson
This track doesn’t come across people Radar that often, I’m not quite sure the reason why, but it could be that it’s a very long day hike or nor quite long enough for an overnight hike. So usually it blips on the radar then is often forgotten about. Last time I walked this track was […]
Adventures slightly off the Beaten Trail- Mount Stevens
We’re always on the scope for New Adventure destinations to share with people, but some we already know intimately. Mount Steven’s track you may have passed many times on the way to the Heaphy Track, there is a tiny little carpark at the bottom of the track in a stunted manuka forest that really doesn’t […]
Ever considered the Mount Richmond Alpine Circuit??
The Mount Richmond Forest Park usually gets little notice as an adventure destination, as if you are sitting in sunny Nelson, then your focus is usually across the Bay to Kahurangi and Abel Tasman National Parks….. However, there’s some absolute gems hidden in this rugged forest Park, one of my favourites is the Mount Richmond […]
Victoria Forest Park Hiking ideas
This is the first winter we haven’t gone on a epic winter discovery tramp, as we were actually basking in the sun on a bike touring through Europe!! But it does bring to mind last years winter discovery expedition. We’d been running quite a lot of transport down to the West Coast and occasionally we […]
Great destinations- The Kahurangi Express
Weather was on the money on the Weekend been, had a few takers for the “Kahurangi Express trip” Getting into the hills on a friday night worked really well to make the standard Weekend seem a whole lot longer. Paced out a trip that I’ve always wanted to do…… Diamond lake Sylvester circuit. Lake Sylvester […]
The Kahurangi Express
Days runs pretty short on these incredibly short periods of time either side of Monday and friday!! So we’re sneaking in a trip which will serve to extend your time in the great outdoor play ground. We call it the Kahurangi Express…. Depart Nelson 5pm, arrive Flora saddle 7pm, frolick around the mountain meadows of […]
That Awesome Cobb Valley
We were up the Cobb valley earlier this month with a great group of Volunteers from the The Gorge Bikepark, including local artist Alison Horn. Alison captured the Weekend with a beautiful water color of the view from Chaffeys Hut, and Daniel Blight got some stunning photographs while up the valley. Good times…..
