We’re always on the scope for New Adventure destinations to share with people, but some we already know intimately.
Mount Steven’s track you may have passed many times on the way to the Heaphy Track, there is a tiny little carpark at the bottom of the track in a stunted manuka forest that really doesn’t look like much. However there is a lot going for this wee track which is why I’ve been up there 3 times, once for a day walk and twice for an overnight.
Mount Stevens is super special because it has the furthest north alpine meadows in the top of the South Island and its location has some pretty special attributes . The meadows sit like an Alpine island on the Wakamarama range in Golden Bay, New Zealand. The gentle rolling tops afford great views over the west coast, the Gouland downs and the Mountains of Kahurangi National Park…. this combined with that’s it’s only a 4 hour hike to the top makes it ideal for a quick overnight to witness the Sun go down over the west coast and then you also get an amazing sunrise over Kahurangi National Park.
Next time you are cruising about in Golden Bay…. take a day and perhaps a night to see what this wee hike has to offer
