Description
Scenic Day Hike Transport – Nelson to Maungatapu, Dun Mountain & Fringed Hill
Looking for a one-of-a-kind hiking adventure just minutes from Nelson city? Our dedicated 4WD shuttle makes it possible to explore some of the region’s most geologically and historically significant trails, without the hassle of logistics.
We’ll take care of the transport—your job is simply to enjoy the hike.
The Journey
-
Maungatapu Saddle (750m): Start the day with a 4WD ride, climbing 600 vertical metres into the Richmond Ranges. This saddle is rich in history, once linked to South Island gold-mining routes and infamous for the Maungatapu Murders of 1866. Today, the track offers stunning alpine bush and mountain scenery.
-
Dun Mountain: Cross one of New Zealand’s geological wonders. Dun Mountain is world-famous as the location of “dunite” rock, and its unique mineral-rich soils foster rare ecosystems. The slopes were once the site of copper and chromite mining and New Zealand’s first railway.
-
Junction Saddle & Native Bush Ridges: Leave the main Coppermine Trail and gain height through magnificent native forest and ridgelines, enjoying broad views of Tasman Bay and the mountains beyond.
-
Fringed Hill Summit: End the hike at 782m, overlooking Nelson and Tasman Bay, with sweeping views stretching toward Abel Tasman National Park. Our team will have your refreshments ready for you here so you can enjoy a well-earned rest before descending by shuttle.
